As a carver I would recommend these only for carving soap, wax or vegetables such as sweet potatoes. They do not have the strength for carving any but the softest of woods.
Since soap, sweet potatoes and wax are, in my opinion, the best beginning materials that's not a bad thing.
Please note that the sharper the tool, the less likely to slip and cut.
Always wear leather or other heavy protective gloves. Never leave a child alone with sharp tools.
