Description

The listing, Redbud 'Judas Tree" Seeds! Incredibly Awesome Spring Flowering Tree! has ended.

This auction is for 10 seeds from my Redbud tree! My tree is 8 years old and every year it gets bigger and more beautiful than the year before!
The Redbud tree, sometimes referred to as the Judas tree, is found in the entire Eastern United States. Also called the Eastern Redbud, it has a lifespan of about twenty years.
Habitat
The Redbud tree prefers deep, moist soil that is well drained. Mainly found growing in under-story of woodlands. The Redbud often grows at a slant as it reaches for sunlight.
Size
The Redbud tree grows to a mature height of 15 to 30 feet tall. It has a canopy spread of 10 to 20 feet, with a trunk measuring from 6 to 10 inches in diameter.
Leaves
The leaves of the Redbud tree are alternate and heart shaped. They are smooth on the edges and smooth in texture.
Fruit
The Redbud tree bears a bean shaped pod in late spring. The bean contains numerous small black to dark brown seeds.
Fun Fact
The Redbud tree actually belongs to the pea family. The Honeylocust, Wisteria, and the Kentucky Coffee Tree are also relatives of the Redbud.
The purple pink flowers of the eastern redbud appear all over the tree in early spring. The flowers are even produced on large trunks. Redbud has a yellow fall color and is shade tolerant.

Awesome question! I try to learn something new everyday and this info did it for me! Here is your answer....

Redbud flowers are edible, with a slightly nutty flavor. They can be added to pancakes or fritters or used as an attractive garnish on salads. Or you can use them to make a unique pickle relish! If you want to sample Redbud flowers, remember, as with the gathering of any wild edible, don't take all that you find. Leave plenty for the tree to produce seeds, for the insects to get nectar and pollen and for people to enjoy for their beauty.

When green and tender, the seed pods are also edible and can be cooked and served with butter just like peas. As they mature, the pods become brown and papery. They may persist on the branches until the following spring. Considering the abundance of seeds produced, it is interesting that only a few birds are known to make them a regular part of their diet.
