Description
The listing, silver serving tray has ended.
this tray was given to me by my sister, she found and an estate sale, the description reads -THE ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK, INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO, SILVER SOLDERED, 05016, 16 IN 24 IN BOX - any more info pls inquire - will ship within US usps
I copied the following paragraph directly from the International Silver Co. web site.
"Sterling silver made in the USA after approximately the 1850’s always has a sterling mark, which looks like a small stamp usually on the back or underside of the piece. It may say “Sterling” or “.925” or show the fraction 925/1000. If it does not have this mark, it is not genuine sterling silver."
I am a silversmith; I make sterling silver jewelry and I can tell you that some handmade sterling silver items do not have the sterling or fine silver markings and there are also some unscrupulous people stamping fake jewelry with a sterling or karated gold mark, so be very careful when buying jewelry, especially from someone you don't know. However, all manufactured pieces like this tray would have to abide by the law and use the '925' or 'sterling' stamp on their sterling silver pieces.
In my opinion, this tray is finely silver plated and it was made for The Roosevelt Hotel in New York, which adds considerable value. It is a very desirable piece in good condition, from what I can see in the photos. I would also say that the rim of the tray was soldered on with silver solder before the piece was plated. That means the base metal under the silver plating has to be copper or perhaps an alloy with a high copper content in order to be silver soldered.
I hope this helps everyone to bid with confidence!
After reading everyone's comments I am confused. Is this tray really silver or is it plated??? I just bid 2588 credits on it so I am hoping it is, cause the seller said it is.
