The listing, Vintage Sesame Street Bert Hand Puppet & Stuffed Ernie Doll-1970's? FREE US SHIPPING! has ended.

This is a vintage plastic head Sesame Street Bert hand puppet, probably dating from the 1970's, and is marked on the neck back, "Muppets, Inc.". Bert's head is in decent condition, and his body is cloth knit fabric with stuffed arms, but he has no hands, and I don't know if he originally did. He has some areas where stitching has come loose at seams (not tears in the fabric), but this would be a very simple fix with a needle and thread. I am also including, as a bonus, a small Ernie stuffed doll by Knickerbocker, probably also 1970's vintage. He has some areas of wear through the cotton woven fabric, a bit of mildew spots on the foot, and he isn't in the best condition, but he is cute! The back of his t-shirt has a large ravelled area and was stitched back up by some previous owner. These come from a smoke-free home. I will include FREE US shipping! Thanks for looking!

LOVE THIS. I had that same puppet as a kid. Once, when my family was too poor to buy many Christmas gifts, my mom took my Bert and Ernie puppets and turned them into Bert and Ernie dolls with fabric and polyfill. Best Christmas gift ever. F&W!

How cute! Do you know if Bert had hands, and if so, what they were made of (fabric or plastic)? I'm not the original owner, or I would know, so I'm really curious! That's really great that your mom was so innovative! They would make good dolls with some stuffing and the addition of legs!

arredhead73: This DID NOT have hands originally. My mom had to make hands with fabric. Seems weird, doesn't it?

Thank you for letting me know that! It was hard to tell just by looking at the ends of the sleeves, but I was leaning toward that nothing had previously been there. I have been so curious about the lack of hands, so I really appreciate you answering that gnawing question for me! And yes, it is very weird!
