It does open. It's about 1 and 1/2 inches big It seem to close with magnetic force, so even though the hinge is hand made and fragile it will snap back and close without a problem.

When I purchased it, it came from india and took over 30 days to arrive. It was so pretty I did not mind. I live in VA it will take only days to get to you.
