The original Star Wars trilogy, also known simply as the Star Wars trilogy, was the first Star Wars trilogy to be filmed and released. Chronologically, it is the second Star Wars trilogy, preceded chronologically by the prequel trilogy. It began in 1977 with the release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, continued in 1980 with Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and concluded in 1983 with Star Wars Episode VI:
