The listing, Buttercrunch lettuce seeds has ended.
Welcome to my auction! This is for 50+ seeds of Buttercrunch lettuce. This is one of my personal favorites. Developed by Cornell University, this heat-tolerant, Bibb-type lettuce has quickly become a favorite since earning All America status in 1963. The heat-tolerance is great for living in SC. They will do well in partial shade, they appreciate it on the sunnier and hotter days. These beauties will hold up to a little frost all the way up to a day here or there in the high 90’s to low 100’s. They take forever to bolt, but a few days in a row at those temperatures can do it. I don’t wait for the heads to form. I pinch off the outer leaves and have lettuce for about 3 months harvesting that way, or you can wait the 55 days until the heads form and just eat from each plant once. If you have a longer season then you can cut the heads off of the plant base and the heads will form again. At the first sign of bolting, it’s time to do a last harvest. It is only on the last harvest that we taste any bitterness, but if you tear off the very bottom of the leaves it can solve it. It is mild enough for us to eat and still enjoy. I hope you enjoy it as well!
