Description

The listing, Green onion seeds... also called bunching onions has ended.

The winner of this auction will win a baggie of approx. 75 green onion seeds straight out of my garden. In some areas of the country they are referred to as bunching onions or salad onions. Mine have successfully reseeded themselves so this year I am sharing some of the seeds I have harvested. I love being able to walk right out my back door any time and pull a few up for salads or to throw in salsa or guacamole. There are so many uses. They have a mild onion flavor that goes well in so many dishes. Bon appetite!

Yes you can eat the whole plant, beneath the ground the onion is white. all you need to do is wash them then cut off the scraggly roots at the tip. The white portion usually is between an inch and an inch and a half long. The white is a little stronger in flavor than the green, you will often see slices of it in Salsa or on salads. I've added a photo of a couple of the onions after they have been pulled from the garden. I trim the roots, leaving just the tip on if I'm storing them in the fridge, if you are using them right away, completely trim away the roots.

Looks like a big plant. Do the seeds come from the flowering part?

The big plant is one I left from last summer. I always leave a few so they will get the flower that holds the seeds, this way they reseed themselves. The photo with the smaller plants shows what I planted in May, they should be ready to start pulling and eating soon. Normally if I'm starting new plants I plant around the end of March, to early April, just had weird weather this year.

Suzie, Are they getting at least 8 hours of sun daily? and regular watering? it's possible that your planter box isn't deep enough or that you planted them too close together, if you plant them close together it's always a good idea to thin them out a little. With all the rain we got late in the season, things are taking a little extra time to mature.... give them time, don't give up. Yours may not be ready to later this summer.
