The 1943 silver colored penny is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc.
Pennies were made of steel coated zinc for one year 1943. Most in existence are rusted and/or tarnished. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort; that's the reason the U.S. penny was made out of steel that year.

The date is easily readable.
