the beads are only on one side the back is just black. Yes they are hand sewn onto the pouch. Its really adorable! :)

I bought one on eBay. It has an elephant in sequins and beads. I thought about making some. I just thought you might have had the same idea. Nice auction these are very handy & beautiful!!
