Howlite is a borate mineral used in a multitude of crafts and jewelry applications. Howlite was discovered near Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How (1828 – 1879), a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist - thus the name. Howlite's natural state is white with fine grey or black veins in an erratic, often web-like pattern. This particular skull carving is a dyed golden yellow color. It has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 - 4. This skull has been carved into the shape of a human skull. It's size is roughly 1 x 1 inch. It is approx. 1/4 inch thick. It looks the same from both sides. Can easily glue a finding to the back or top to use in jewelry applications. Also great incorporated in crafts projects.
