Founding of the U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established on October 13, 1775. The Continental Congress authorized the procurement and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of ships supplying munitions to the British Army in America. The Continental Navy numbered approximately 50 ships during the course of the Revolutionary War.

U.S. #791 1937 2c Decatur & MacDonough
Issue Date: January 15, 1937
Stephen Decatur and Thomas MacDonough were Naval officers during the War of 1812. During the War, Decatur gained fame for capturing the British frigate "Macedonian."

U.S. #792 1937 3c Farragut & Porter
Issue Date: February 18, 1937
Not only were David Farragut and David Porter both Civil War Naval commanders, they were adopted brothers. Both served during the Civil War, with Farragut earning praise as the “hero of Mobile Bay.”

U.S. #793 1936-37 4c Sampson, Dewey, and Schley
Issue Date: March 23, 1937
Featured three naval heroes of the Spanish-American War – Admirals William Sampson, George Dewey, and Winfield Schley. Both officers were at the end of long and distinguished careers when they worked together to completely destroy the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. All six Spanish ships were sunk or captured, while the American force lost only one sailor.

The United States Naval Academy
George Bancroft established the Naval School at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1845. It was built at the site of Fort Severn, a former Army post. During 1850 and 1851, the Naval School was reorganized as the United States Naval Academy. It is the oldest military college in the United States.
