First in a five-stamp series honoring Army heroes. Pictured are Revolutionary War Generals George Washington and Nathanael Greene, plus Mount Vernon.

U.S. #786 1937 2c Jackson & Scott
Issue Date: January 15, 1937
After first achieving fame during the War of 1812, General Andrew Jackson became the seventh President of the United States. General Winfield Scott served as an Army officer for over 50 years. Even though he was a Virginian, Scott refused to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

U.S. #787 1937 3c Sherman, Grant and Sheridan
Issue Date: February 18, 1937
William T. Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, and Philip Sheridan each achieved fame as Union generals during the Civil War. After retiring from the Army, General Grant went on to become the 18th President of the United States.

U.S. #788 1936-37 4c Lee and Jackson
Issue Date: March 23, 1937
Part of a 10-stamp series that commemorated Army and Navy heroes of the United States – 5 stamps for each. Shown in the background of U.S. #788 is Stratford Hall in northern Virginia – the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. Four generations of the Lee family lived in the plantation, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence (Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee).

Issue Date: May 26, 1937
Part of a set of stamps honoring U.S. Army and Navy heroes. It is one of two stamps (along with the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland) not featuring a military commander in the group. Founded by an act of Congress in 1802, the United States Military Academy is located in West Point, NY, on the bank of the Hudson River.
