I found this Equipment Review: Audiovox GMRS1582CH Two-Way Radio at

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2344422/equipment_review_audiovox_gmrs1582ch.html

The Audiovox GMRS1582CH is a twin two-way radio system. If you're out boating, hiking, or backpacking with a companion, it's very useful for keeping in contact. It offers an impressive range of 15 miles. You can find this model for an average price of $25.

Each two-way radio features 22 channels. Each channel has its own set of 38 privacy codes. This presents you with 836 different channel combinations. Not only will this help eliminate interference, it will also help keep others from being able to listen to your communications.

Control

The Audiovox GMRS1582CH is equipped with a monochrome LCD display. The display is backlit to make for easier use during at night. The electronic controls offer a range of functions such as power, lock, channel scan, volume, and monitor. There is also a push-to-talk and voice-operated function.

VOX

As you just learned, the Audiovox GMRS1582CH offers a voice-operated transmitter. It will automatically start transmitting whenever you start talking. This is very useful when you need to operate the unit without having to use your hands.

Battery

The Audiovox GMRS1582CH two-way radios are powered by NiMh, or nickel-metal hydride, batteries. Each radio uses four AAA NiMh batteries. You are provided with a desktop charger when you purchase the radios. This dual desktop charger allows you to recharge both units at the same time.

License

This is a GMRS radio, not an FRS model. Therefore, you will need to purchase an FCC operator's license before you can use the Audiovox GMRS1582CH. You don't need an FCC operator's license when using an FRS radio.

I think if you use channels 1 -14 FRS channels you won't need an FCC license...
