Description
The listing, Used Cat Toys has ended.
A 6 x 7 x 2 box stuffed with old cat toys - 18 of them. Please keep in mind that they are old and used, so aren't in perfect condition (dusty, a bit tattered, etc.) Non-picky cats shouldn't mind though :)
From a non-smoking home. Thanks for taking a look!
Questions & Comments
I'm sorry, I know you mean well but used kitty toys are bound to be loaded with bacteria laden dirt and saliva, not a good idea to give to other cats...........
Hello, thank you for your comment! I used to be a microbiology major, so I understand your concern. Cats are actually exposed to a lot of dirt and grime in general; regardless of being indoors or outdoors. As humans, we carry in dirt and bacteria from outside into our homes. If it helps, my cat has never been sick. But luckily - like us humans - cats have a robust immune system to help deal with such mini-invaders that are everywhere...whether you're going to find them on used cat toys, on the carpet, or on our clothes.
A cat or kitten can be a carrier of feline herpesvirus spreading it through everything they touch even if they've never had an active case or a minor unnoticed repiratory case. Currently there’s no cure for feline herpesvirus infections. Kittens are at most risk as their immune system is underdeveloped which can have a deadly outcome. So is it really worth taking the risk to expose ones cats or kittens to usedcat toys offered on this auction or anywhere else?
It is true that feline herpes or "FHV" can be utterly debilitating for cats. It is caused by a virus that is found in their saliva, mucus, and other liquids from their eyes, nose, and mouth. But since it is caused by a virus, FHV cannot be found outside their host after long periods of time. These toys have been stored - untouched - in a drawer for 4 years. Viruses cannot live outside of their host for that long of a time.
In general, it is difficult to create cures for viruses because they mutate very fast, so it is difficult to biosynthesize a cure that will match a virus' form at one time. Veterinarians can provide antiviral drugs and generally "treat the symptoms" to make a cat with FHV better. However, as I said before, viruses cannot live for long periods outside of their host, and these toys are old and have been stored for years...and will also be washed with hot water after I'm finished replying :)
You also previously spoke of pre-existing bacteria on used toys. FHV is a virus, so it is not a bacteria. I will put these toys in the wash with only hot water to help disinfect them. Also, with your rationale concerning sharing cat toys and other cat-utilized items, multi-cat households would be absolutely dangerous and all the cats would be considered "at-risk."
I'm sure our posts have proved very educational to other viewers :) Thank you for your insight.
Too bad the bidding went too high, really could have used this nice assortment, we have a new kitten and our 2 1/2 year old female cat won't share her toys with Miss Kitty but will leave alone whatever we give Miss Kitty.
