Catharanthus roseus aka
Rose Periwinkle, Cayenne Jasmine, Madagascar Periwinkle, Old Maid, Vinca

A semiwoody evergreen perennial, usually grown as an annual in flower beds. In frostfree climates develops a woody stem and can get 2-3 ft tall & spread just as wide. As annuals, they are usually smaller & more prostrate. Doesn't need deadheading - flowers drop off when they finish.

Where not hardy, grow in a container or as an annual in the summer flower bed. Great in porch planters and window boxes. Thrives in the heat of summer when true periwinkles fade. In frostfree regions this pretty little flower is grown in borders and beds, as an edging plant or ground cover. Very tolerant of hot summers, it is the southern & summertime replacement for true periwinkles.

Zones 9 - 11

Part shade/part sun/full sun.

Germinates in about a wk temp of 70 - 75F.

Water moderately. Relatively drought resistant once established.

These grow wild all over Florida & are very rugged. I think they are an annual, but in my garden they live a very long time. I don't remember ever pulling out spent plants. I pull them out to give away or because they've popped up where I don't really want them. They bloom constantly and spread (by seed) quickly.

In my area, it can be considered invasive, but they are easy to pull up & when small, easy to just mow over. Seed pods form on the little stems. They look like tiny upright pea pods. Leaves are dark green & shiny. Does well in most any soil, even sandy poor, but well drained soil. I have seen them my whole life, but never really appreciated them until I wanted to attract more butterflies. They are not fussy, pretty much taking care of themselves and I just love 'em! They bloom year round at my house in central FL. Butterflies love the necture and they reseed easily.

10 pods w/ approx. 20-30 seeds per pod.

When I lived in Africa, the Periwinkle was one of the few things that would grow-they were everywhere and there were so many colors! As you said they are hearty and take minimal care-we watered them about once a week. Great item to have where water is an issue and I know this might sound sappy, but they always seem to be smiling at you and that smile continues through the day.

They do, don't they? I just love 'em. They sure cheer up a drab, sparse area in a hurry! I have 3 colors blooming right now.

You think, pamperme? They won't last you long will they? It's going to get cold there soon isn't it? Maybe you should try container growing them.
