George Washington (1732-99)
Ancestry and Family

The roots of the Washington family can be traced back to the year 1260 in England. At that time, the name was “de Wessington.” Sulgrave Manor in England is considered the ancestral home of the Washingtons.

George’s great-grandfather, John Washington, settled in America after the ship he was on ran aground near Virginia. While the ship was being repaired, John decided to marry. Though he started with little, within 20 years John owned more than 5,000 acres, including the land that would become Mount Vernon. John’s oldest son, Lawrence, was George’s grandfather. Lawrence’s youngest son, Augustine, was George’s father.

Augustine had four children by his first wife, Jane Butler, who died in 1729. In 1731, Augustine married Mary Ball, and had six more children, of whom George was the first born.
