Located near Atlanta, Georgia, Stone Mountain Memorial pays tribute to Civil War heroes of the Confederacy - Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson. At 650 feet high - 20 feet higher than Mt. Rushmore - Stone Mountain Memorial is the largest sculpture in the entire world.
The sculpting project began in 1923 under Gutzon Borglum. But, Borglum left Stone Mountain to work on Mount Rushmore. Work continued under Henry A. Lukeman, but ceased in 1929 due to lack of funds. In 1964, Walker Kirtland Hancock resumed work on the sculpture and completed the project five years later.
Stone mountain is the largest stone mountain, or smooth-sided rock dome, in North America
