The listing, LUXURY RAILROAD POCKET WATCH has ended.

This is a Luxury Railroad Gold Pocket Watch..This came from my 86 year old Aunts Jewelry Box so i have NO clue how old this is....I am a Great Seller on Listia with low starting bids, but this Auction i feel that the starting Bid is a Fair one...There are No markings on the Cover, ......I just had the back of this watch opened...The only markings i can find is ALR ...The inside of the backing says China made and the inside of the Watch says Luxury,....Which is Not Cheap.....Listia address only....Happy Bidding.... My starting bid was 15000...I'm going to lower it to 7000 starting bid..

Based on the research I did 15,000 credits is a fair price. ($5.00 US = Listia1,500 credits) It is a reproduction made in China by a company out of the province of Guangdong, China. If it is a wind-up with swiss movement you could be safe with GIN of 20,000 -25,000 credits. By no means am I an expert in pocket watches. This is just my opinion based on research I did.

My Grandfather, his name was Virgil Hoover, he ran the railroad from out west to Indiana to Pittsburgh through Ohio too. The train would drop him off for a few days down the street from Grannys house in Greensfork , Ind. He had an old watch that played "I been working on the railroad" Had no quartz, no battery, it was windup, American made. This was back in the 50's right before he retired. No batterys or quartz back then I dont think.

jewels? hmm i dont think so..U mean when u take the back off?..I didnt see anything like that when the back was off

The jewels are tiny, they act as bushings for the moving parts, to keep the watch accurate- if a railroad watch wasn't accurate, people could be hurt! Most had 17 or more jewels; several should be visible when the case is open.

Here's a little info on jewels from Wikipedia.

Jewel bearings were invented in 1704 for use in watches by Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, Peter Debaufre, and Jacob Debaufre, who received an English patent for the idea. Originally natural jewels were used, such as diamond, sapphire, ruby, and garnet. In 1902, a process to make synthetic sapphire and ruby (crystalline aluminium oxide, also known as corundum) was invented by Auguste Verneuil, making jewelled bearings much cheaper. Today most jewelled bearings are synthetic ruby or sapphire.

If you don't see any red colors in the back of the watch then there is most likely no jewels. Hope the info helps out.

Oh and he died in the early 1960's. He was into his late 80's then, but I dont think he ever would carry anything from China. I do not trust anything from China, neither should anyone else. But it is an amazing piece.
