The listing, Widow's Mite (Lepton of Caponius) 6-9 A.D. has ended.
St. Luke 21:1-3, "And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all." This Greek bronze coin was obviously the "mite" referred to to in the famous Bible story-it was the smallest coin known to and used by the Jews.
Questions & Comments
I did some research, and what I found is that there are two coins in modern day which people call the widows mite. There is the prutah, and the lepton. The lepton is a smaller coin, and the prutah a larger coin. They are very similar, and they were often intermixed like our pennies and nickels and dimes are today. However, I did further research, and found out that the lepton is the coin spoken of in the Bible as the widows mite, and the prutah is not. The prutah existed when Jesus would have been about 12 years of age. The coin pictured above is sadly not the lepton, or the widows mite referred to in the Bible, but it is the prutah because of the ear of barley annd the inscription of Caesar on the other side. However, it is still considered a widows mite today, and its pretty cool to see a coin that dates that far back :)
Very interesting. I've got a few more that were used in biblical times with just as interesting stories about them. I plan to list them soon so definitely check them out too. It's pretty amazing how one little coin can have so much history:)
From what I read online, the Widow's Mite coin has multiple images for either side. I will say, the star is more predominant it seems. I could not find anywhere that says there is only 2 images that make them authentic. I'm no expert though so if you find something different I'll be happy to hear it. Thanks!
