in the milder climates that do not snow it is an outside or inside plant. I got this plant from florida where it as kept outside all year. in my garden book it says a houseplant. A friend has this plant in her yard and she said that it grows everywhere and on just about anything. Right now I have a baby growing on a piece of mulch ;0 It grows in just about any soil but i think a cactus mix of soil and sand would be best
