Questions & Comments
Scott catalog USA 1T16, issued 1881. American Rapid Telegraph stamp. Telegraph stamps were used by private companies for use on their own telegrams. Like U.S. postage stamps, they feature high-quality engraving and printing to deter counterfeiters. In fact, the American Rapid Telegraph Co. stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company. It would be considered a US BOB (back of book) stamp.
I think they were originally issued as vertical se-tenant stamps (issued as a pair together, joined), with the "collect" stamp on top and the "duplicate" stamp below. The duplicate was kept for record keeping. They were used to collect payment for telegrams. They are considered real stamps and are of interest to US BOB collectors. Great auction!!
