Hobbled by an infected toe and nursing pain from his past with alcohol, Bobby (John Travolta) is a drunken mess who redeems his character by quoting authors from stacks of books he gathered during his former days as an English professor. Bobby lives with his former teaching assistant who is writing a book about his mentor, a project interrupted by drinking, hanging with locals, and engaging in quotation oneupsmanship. Scarlett Johansson plays Pursy, the estranged daughter of Lorraine, a recently deceased singer-songwriter in whose house Bobby and Lawson reside; eventually the trio becomes a misfit family of sorts.
