What does it mean by 3.5" desltop....I am not to literate but know I need one of these. Hope it is something I can use.

3.5" is the width of the space the drive will fit into, A desktop is a tower or computer casing that sits on top of your desk or under it, and a laptop you can hold in your lap or one that folds up and is portable and they are 2.5".

it is 4 7/8" long, 2 7/8" wide, and 1/2" thick. the external case mod.# is FC L-602,the LAP TOP hard drive ic mod.# WD5000BPVT

yes sir, in fact is formatted and ready to go as we speak, it is new as you can see by the date. And the other one I have listed is exactly the same as this one just a different external case. and if someone would like an external with a smaller drive or larger driver I can accommodate your preference.

yes you can use it as an external drive for your desk top and pretty much any computer.
the 2.5" represents the width dimension it fits into ie: 2.5" lap top and 3.5" desk top

I am so sorry to be so stupid but this external goes on the outside on my desk and uses a USB to be plugged into my tower...right? So where does the or what does the 3.5" mean.? Does that mean just the amount of space I need to sit it next to my tower? Please dont laugh.

No , its just the size the Manufacturer gives it for a Industry Standard.
You can put the external drive anywhere that you have room
