The listing, 25 seeds ~ 8-9ft ~ Pink Hollyhocks has ended.
Alcea rosea (al-KEE-uh RO-zee-uh)
These seeds are from the 9-ft + high hollyhock stalk that bloomed in my garden this spring from late March until mid-May. Hollyhocks are biennial -- they bloom their 2nd year. In some areas -- with heat much milder than Central Texas -- these can be perennial -- USDA zones 2a - 9a.
If these seeds are planted this summer (sow ½ in. deep and 36 in apart) and the area kept moist, they just might produce plants that will bloom in 2013. Else, they will start having profuse blooms beginning in early spring 2014.
Hollyhocks grow well in soils from mildy acidic to mildly alkaline. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Hollyhocks have average watering needs -- water regularly but do not overwater.
The plants will self-sow freely, so deadhead after blooms expire if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season. A seed pod will be produced where each bloom had appeared.
This auction is for a minimum of 25 seeds.
All seeds I offer have been treated with ground cinnamon to help inhibit seedling problems with damp-off. Some surplus cinnamon residue will be seen in the seed packet.
