Description

The listing, Shoo-Fly Black Rod (many seeds) has ended.

Shoofly Black Rod Plant AKA Apple of Peru
Nicandra physalodes
Was very surprised at how easy it was to sprout from seed and when plants were only a few inches high, it started flowering and hasn't stopped. From this early spring to end of Aug 2012 and it is still doing very well. The mass of true blue (sky blue to med. blue flowers) is amazing and many comment on how beautiful the flowers are, even the stems which are a dark purple and black and there is spotting all through the light green leaves with purple and black. Very attractive plant! Does seem to hold up to truth about keeping away white flies and have noticed black flies have not been a bother at all this hot summer at least near this plant.
Also grown in greenhouses as it attracts and kills white flies! Grows aprox. 3ft in height with a 2-3 ft spread
Self seeding annual Trumpet shaped flowers
Stems are dark purple and black with some purple stripping. Develops Chinese lantern seed pods and would be pretty to use in flower arrangements.
This probably will be the only auction for this (unless it does very well) it will be going to market soon. Don't miss out on this...it is truly an eye catching, beautiful plant.
I'm not going to count the seeds but there will be close to 100 seeds if not more!

F & W. I probably should read your listing more closely, but it is easier for me to just ask: Is this an annual and is it an outside plant? I see you are "up north" while we are in zone 7b?

It is a self seeding annual meaning that seeds that drop on the ground probably will sprout come next year. Mine grew inside for the first part of it's life until I ran out of room. I do not see why it wouldn't grow inside if it has lots of light and water but it is meant to grow outside. From what I have heard from others, they do grow theirs in greenhouses so my guess is that it would do ok inside.

Does this take full sun, or what does it need. F, W and bidding please fan back

Hi Margie, the only time I do not fan back is if there are really bad ratings (many) on that person ( i have had to deal with several people that are less than nice and extremely picky) that also gave me bad ratings and they want everything perfect and all for free, that's a pet peeve i have, or when they say...fanned and watching but never bid..that shows me they are not sincere or when i was working and if away from the computer for days then never get caught up on mail because way to much e-mail. You have some really nice auctions going on and after posting this I will go back and bid!
This plant does well in full sun at least in northeast Pennsylvania but all the things I've read on this before states full sun to partial shade. If you are in a desert area or where the sun is brutal, probably give it more shade. Hope this helps.

pretty flowers!! I tried to fan you, but it states that my fan limit has been reached. I know when I 1st started Listia, I use to fan everyone, but ppl would not fan me back; and I was told that is the reason why i'm limited now.. sometimes I can fan, but majority of the time, I can't. (sry) I am watching this auction and I'm bidding on it!! I like these and I think they are neat!!! Have a great, blessed and safe day today and a better one tomorrow!! God Bless you and your family! :-)

thank you vickie they really are a beautiful blue flowering bush. I'm thinking of starting more of these and place all around the yard front and back. In late summer it is hard to find any blue flowering plant and it lightens up the area a lot.

I'm not sure connie, it depends on the time I have and I do want to do some daylily seeds soon but I will have to cut back even with stamps soon until I find work again. There is no unemployment so money is tight.
