yes they are but like all gps if you want to know about road contruction you have to update on computer

I'm kind of stupid, but does it use voice to give directions as well then I would'nt need it mounted?

Yes it has voice to tell you directions and does have the options to mount on the windshied but lost that part you can also download different voices from your favorite celberty when hooked up to computer
