Just a quick clairfication note: This item is very nice, I received it as a gift. However, just doesn't match my decor. One note, the item has a very heavy plastic type material that holds the bells. The bells themselves are bronze/brass and very heavy.

what kind of sound do they make (if they make any at all) and do they come with a mallet or anything?

I can't really explain it, other than bell type sounds. They each have a different sound and you can play them, however they do not have a mallet. But you could use anything I would imagine. I've just had them for ornamental use, rather than actual playing as an instrument. Hope that helps answer your question. THanks for your question.

Hi there! take a look at the 5 photos, if you look on the 3rd photo, you'll see a white background. The background is a standard sheet of paper I put behind, so it would show the details better.
