Slight shelf wear. Hardback w/ dust jacket.

In this military memoir, General Tommy Franks, the former Commander in Chief of Central Command, tells stories from key points in his life, beginning with his boyhood in Oklahoma in the 1950s, about the people & events that helped shape his character & view of the world. Franks's military career began in Vietnam, where he got his first taste of war & the responsibilities of command; this was followed by peacetime challenges, when he shipped to Europe at a time when both standards & morale were low. (True to form, Franks shook things up.) Later, he was a Brigadier General commanding troops during Operation Desert Storm, where smart bombs & the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) marked a major change in tactics. Franks's rise to the top coincided with large changes in basic doctrine as the military changed to meet 21st-century challenges & Franks was a prime mover behind those changes. Half of the book covers his term as Commander in Chief of CENTCOM, perhaps his highest achievement, during which he had considerable contact with heads of state in the countries in his region, as well as with his American superiors, who come in for a fair amount of both praise & criticism. During this time, Franks also became concerned with international security & with the rise of terror movements, including al Qaeda. (The bombing of the USS Cole took place on his watch.) The successful Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan was followed by Operation Iraqi Freedom, where in 23 days the American army & the coalition forces moved into & captured Baghdad. From his Vietnam days through Iraq, Franks demonstrates an interest not only in strategies & tactics but also in innovation & practicality.

The book charts the development of character in a soldier & the changes in the military since Vietnam in a way that no other book does.
