The listing, Merchants Bank of Alexandria, VA Promissory Note - 1836! has ended.
That's NOT a mistake! This promissory note was issued by the Merchants Bank of Alexandria (VA) on October 3rd, 1836, to a "C.W. Knight". I can't read the signatures of the Cashier or President due to damage.
The note has been endorsed by Mr. Knight on the reverse, so it appears he got his $5!
The note is extremely fragile! The paper feels more like a facial tissue than what we would consider proper currency paper. It may be rice paper, or has just been handled so much that all of the crispness has been worked out of the paper!
I have no doubts as the the authenticity of this note. If you look at the year, the ink has a brown tinge to it. This is due to the iron in the ink rusting over the years. Such rusting also causes the ink to bleed through the paper, and you can clearly see the ink marks on the reverse.
This would make a great gift for the collector of items from the Southern coastal states. A great lead-in to CSA memorabilia!
This will run 10 days so that everyone can get a look and build up some credits to win!
US bidders only, please.
