Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata), also known as five leaf akebia, native to Asia, is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Plant in a partially shaded site. Grows in full sun but prefers some protection from the midday sun. Prefers rich, loamy soils with good drainage but will grow well in most soil types. Prune your plant when it reaches the dimensions you require by removing the growing tips. Growth rate is so fast, it makes an excellent cover for arbors, trellises, pergolas or fences. Will grow 15-20 feet in one summer. Untrained plants can be rampant and invasive. Water your chocolate vine when the surface of the soil is dry. The species is drought-resistant, but grows best with regular watering.
Growing chocolate vine produces edible seedpods that taste similar to tapioca pudding. If you wish to have fruit, you must plant more than one five leaf akebia vine.
