A Few Handy Definitions
(Public knowledge; feel free to copy)
BULLION- The pure form of a precious metal such as gold, silver, palladium or platinum, in the form of bars or ingots. (At least 99.5% pure)
BULLION COINS- Legal tender, not intended for general circulation; made for the purpose of investing in precious metals. (At least 99.5% pure)
CLAD- A manufacturing method; does not indicate content.
A clad coin consists of outer layers of one metal bonded to a core of a different metal.
GRAIN- 15.43 grains = 1 gram
GRAM- 31.1 grams = 1 troy ounce
MAGNET TEST- Only proves an item is NOT precious metal.
Will not prove an item IS a precious metal, since most metals (aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, titanium, zinc, gold, silver) are not magnetic.
In fact, ferromagnetism occurs in very few substances; the common ones are iron, nickel, cobalt, and certain rare earth metals such as gadolinium, neodymium and samarium.
MILLS- A term misused by unscrupulous sellers to sell plated items to the unwary- when confronted they often claim it infers plating thickness.
PLATED- A very thin layer of metal deposited on the surface of another metal.
TROY- Weight system customarily used for precious metals. There are 12 troy ounces per troy pound rather than the 16 ounces per pound in the avoirdupois system.
