Rose Campion (Lychnis coronaria), a favorite through generations for its striking magenta flowers and year-round of fuzzy, silvery gray oval foliage popular in such early American gardens as Thomas Jefferson’s at Shadwell in 1767.
This is a very hardy plant. It is drought resistant, deer resistant , needs very little maintenance, and grows well in partial shade or full sun, growing almost anywhere, even in gravel!
It self-sows so thinning when 1½" tall, leaving a plant every 12" – 15" is necessary to limit growing where not wanted. The plants transplant easily.
The Rose Campion is grown as a perennial/biennial in zones 4-8 because during the first season, the plant will be small and will not bloom except for the fuzzy silver green foliage that is beautiful all by itself The second season the plants will bloom their simple and beautiful magenta 5-petal flower on a gray stem that grows to approximately 2-3 feet tall.
When to sow outside: 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost, and up to 2 months before first fall frost.
Special germination instructions: Seed requires light to germinate. Press lightly into soil; do not cover with soil. Keep moist. Seed also benefits from stratification, a cold treatment.
