Evening Primrose aka Fever plant or Oenothera is drought resistance plant with multiple yellow flowers and long feather-shaped leaves along the red-stalk, reaching 3-4 ft tall attracting many butterflies and bees. It is a biennial, completing it's life-cycle in 2 growing seasons.
Because blooms open at dusk or on a cloudy day, it is a lovely addition a moon garden!
Very easy to grow altho seeds need light & warmth to germinate. Ideal temperature is 20C/68F so sow seeds accordingly to your zone. Seeds should germinate within about 2-4 weeks. Grows well if scattered on the surface of even lightly cultivated, well-drained, soil. Prefers sun. A tough plant that likes to be ignored ... The green leaves may actusllt discolour when grown in shade and become deforemed with too much fertilizer!
This plant self-seeds remove the flowers before they have time to produce seeds if you want to control production and placement.
Whole plant can be harvested at any time for culinary purposes and medicinal herb. The flowers are the preferred parts for these purposes,but all parts are useful. Best time to collect plants is when flowering in Fall of the 2nd growth year.
Culinary Uses: Whole plant is edible as a vegetable. Add leaves to salads and flowers to salads as a garnish like Nasturtiums. Seeds can be chewed,or cooked in breads and biscuits,or steamed,or roasted in the oven for 15-20 minutes @ 350° to sprinkled on food like pepper. Leaves and roots can be eaten fresh. The 2nd year roots can be boiled like potatoes or marinated in oil & vinegar before eating. There are many recipes available using flower & root.
For medicinal purposes it is recommended by herbalists, for women suffering from PMS & menstrual discomforts along with others maladies.
