Description

The listing, Desert Willow Seeds has ended.

This auction is for 20+ Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) Seeds.

The Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) is also called a Sweet Desert Willow. It is a small tree native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is not related to the traditional willow tree, but gardeners here in the Southwest love this plant because it evokes the shape of a true Willow, and produces a canopy of beautiful flowers.

It is drought tolerant and extremely easy to grow and propagate. This large deciduous shrub can grow into a small tree with a maximum height of about 30 feet and a maximum width of about 25 feet. It's long dark green narrow leaves are willow-like and it's flowers are fragrant.

The Desert Willow is a summer favorite here in Arizona. Its small to medium shape makes it suitable for smaller areas. It does lose it's leaves in winter and forms narrow seed capsules. While not the prettiest tree in winter, the flowers produced spring through fall make it more than worth it. And the flowers attract hummingbirds, inviting these desirable guests into the garden.

They start blooming in May through June without water, and with regular watering the flowers keep blooming until late September or the first frost. The tree does well in elevations from 0 to 5000 feet above sea level. It likes the sun and does best in the desert. It is easy to grow for colorful landscaping and shade where other trees and shrubs will not grow or do poorly. This tree is virtually pest, deer and disease free, and needs very little maintenance.

Although the natural growth produces a very irregular shape, it can be readily pruned into a conventional tree shape. The plant will grow in full sun and partial shade. It needs very well drained soil and does not like moisture at its roots. It grows well in rocky and gravel soils and thrives in very hot and dry areas.

Hardiness Zones: 7a to 11a
