Description

The listing, Jackmanii Climbing Purple Clematis 20+ seeds has ended.

Clematis 'Jackmanii' was first introduced in 1862, it was the first of the modern large-flowered clematises. These seeds come from my great-grandma's farm house built around that time. It's a climber! Grows up to 10 feet on the trellis every year. These large velvety violet purple blooms are 3" in diameter. They love the sun and bloom all summer if watered regularly. I would love to share my great-grandma's love of gardening by having her prized Clematis growing in your garden!
Questions & Comments

I grew clematis in NY from a bulb. Does the seed have to become a bulb before it blooms? Thank you.

No it does not. The reason the Jackmanii is special is that it seeds itself where it grows. Many different varieties of Clematis although this one ranks very high in hardiness. I will provide complete instruction on how to germinate and grow along with the shipment of seeds. Thank You and good luck!

Yes any trellis for these is appreciated and used! It will cling to the wire fence and it will continue in following years.

is this a group 2 or a group 3 vine - - does it need hard pruning in the fall or in the early spring?

I replied to your question in the wrong spot, sorry!

After looking up the definitions again, this would be considered a class 2 vine. Now with this classification I believe you understand they do need or should have nutrient rich soil. Spring pruning is usually not needed unless you leave the fall pruning until then. Nitogen in the Spring and Phosphorus in the summer for a lasting, ever blooming vine/bush. I use Peters 10-50-10 for the blooming and wow!
