Purple hyazinth bean is a tropical perennial that is often grown as an annual in cooler climates. A vining member of the legume, or bean, family, this deeply dramatic ornamental is amazing in the landscape and has gained popularity as a cut flower for both its fragrant blooms and its brilliant purple pods.

A popular nitrogen-fixing cover crop, it is often planted in rotation after rice cultivation to replenish soil nutrition.

While the pods are commonly cooked and eaten in many tropical countries, please note that the dried mature seeds should never be eaten.

If you want to get a head start on the seeds, start them indoors 8 weeks before your last frost date. Otherwise start them outside after danger of frost has passed. Give them a trellis so they can climb up.
