West Virginia is an eastern US state in the tree-covered Appalachian Mountains. Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River, is the site of a famous Civil War–era raid. On June 20, 1863, being the 35th state to be admitted into the Union, the wartime state of West Virginia was born by acceptance of the federal government. Was part of Virginia until statehood.

The fifth and final quarter to be released in 2005 commemorates the State of West Virginia. The 50 State Quarter of West Virginia was released on October 14, 2005, featuring the New River and the New River Gorge Bridge. The image is a tribute to the scenic beauty of West Virginia combined with a tribute to the engineering feat exemplified by the New River Gorge Bridge. At 3,030 feet long and 69 feet wide, the bridge is the world's largest steel span and the second-highest bridge in the United States, rising 876 feet above the New River Gorge in southern West Virginia.
