do u need a landline to use it or a modem ?

It uses an ethernet input. Instead of the ethernet cable from my cable modem connected to my laptop, I pluged it into the 'Fon', and had wirless.

It works well. Just plug the ethernet cable from your moden into it, and youv'e got wireless WiFi. Has good range. The back corner of our backyard is 165' from the 'computer room', and I can use my laptop out there.
