Description

The listing, Strange Morgan Silver Dollar with Date Scratched Out has ended.

I got this coin in a lot of six for $222 from a highly rated eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/190652006622?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

That doesn't mean anything in regards to this coin though I suppose. Anyway for some strange reason the date was scratched out. The only reason I can see why it might have happened is it has an O mint mark and if the date was originally a 1921 date, then this coin would be a fake since there are no 1921 O Morgans.

Well at any rate the scratches reveal no underlying copper. The coin weighs 26.6 grams, in the range of the uncirculated value of 26.73 grams. So maybe .13 grams were scratched off.

I don't know much about coin conditions but this seems VF-XF.

Ok.. heres the scoop.. this is a plated coin.. but good for memories.. the story.. or legend if this is the reason behind it is.. in the early 1900's even up to today in some groups.. merchants and mercinaraies took a single coin out of a payment recieved and scraped off the date of that single coin to signify a memory. this was also done by monks in the early 1400's to signify purity of a township and given to the ruler/governer of that town. but that only lasted a few years becouse the bishop of that area couldnt cash in on the coins as taxes. anyways.. just a legend that i remember from a few documents on some old maps. good auction i will be watching and bidding :-)

Interesting explanation, but all the tests show that it is real silver. See the amendment descriptions.

Looks like a "COPY" coin with the "COPY" scratched out.

Aha. That is an interesting point. Could be, but it still seems to be made from silver...

Well I did my tests. See above. I'm getting the regular silver acid today or Monday and will test one more time before shipping out. I will refund if that test goes bad.

Why would someone scatch the date ? So you think it's Silver ?

I think it's silver. The weight is right. Why they would scratch the date is mysterious. It has the shine of the Peace dollars, so maybe it was supposed to be a 1921. However with the O marking it would be fake. Why they just didn't just scratch off the mint mark though is an interesting question.

Are you sure it's a 1921 and what happened with the magnet test

With a strong rare earth magnet, no attraction at all. See my amendment for other tests.

If you have a local jeweler or even a pawn shop they can run a quick test for you, If you could say for sure its a real coin you'll probably get close to 50k for it, other wise it only may be as low as 15k, hate to see you lose that much, they can hard to tell with the naked eye, I got 6 counterfeits two weeks ago and they looked almost better then the real ones

You mean a 1921 O Morgan dollar is worth 50K? They apparently closed the New Orleans mint in 1909 so there should be no 1921 O coins. After putting a drop of silver acid on this coin the next digit after the one may be visible. It looks like an 8 not a 9 after all. None of the other digits are visible. I don't think this worth anything but junk silver rates.

from what I can make out it looks to be from the 1880's

That's my guess but I could be hallucinating. I tried stencil on paper over the date, but that didn't help.

morgan dollars started in 1879, they are all the same except the dates and mint marks....1893,94,and 95 were melted down because of the war. the survivors are really rare and expensive.
