The Red Poppy:
This fragile looking,(so silky & papery thin, it doesn't look real) brilliantly red poppy is probably the world's most popular wildflower. They will withstand wind & rain, although they look fragile, they are not.
The Red Poppy is so popular & widespread, in fact, that there is some confusion about it. Even though the seed looks about the same, it is not the species used for making poppy seed rolls in baking. It's also not the famous species used in the production of opium & heroin. The Opium Poppy, Papaver somniferum, a larger annual species, is the one that produces the seeds for baking & also the narcotic sap for illegal drugs.
The Red Poppy is the small-size annual species (only about 12" to 14" tall with blooms from 2" to 3" wide) that is sometimes called "Shirley Poppy", "Flanders Poppy," "American Legion Poppy" & in England, "Corn Poppy."
These beauties blowing in a soft breeze are extraordinary!
The seed is very small & best dusted in an area where you want them to grow with a shaker or empty spice container. Sow in Feb, to March in warmer areas & after the last frost in colder areas. Cover lightly with soil & be prepared to be wowed! These plants make seed pods that contain on a average of 160-180 seed. They are very small though, so I am not going to open the pod. I will send 2 pods which an give you up to 300+ plants. The powdery seed will adhere to where you open it, so to keep this from happening put a small amount of sand or dry soil in a empty spice shaker, carefully open the pod, over the container, put open pod & seeds in the spice shaker, cover & shake/mix. Then shake evenly sowing outdoors where you want them & lightly cover with soil.
