Common name(s) : BLUE PASSIONFLOWER

Botanical name(s): Passiflora caerulea

Blue Passion Flower vines can grow to a length of 40 feet and should be spaced 6 - 8 ft. apart . . . They need support--something to climb--such as a fence, trellis, the side of a chimney. They bloom from mid-Summer into the Fall, attracting bees and butterflies. It is a host plant for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly in the Spring. This vine loves sunlight and heat--it can almost never get too hot for it. While it can be grown in colder climates as an attractive and fragrant annual, it is hardy in USDA zones 6 - 10.

These seeds need a bit of stratification--cooling in the veggie drawer of your refrigerator, for 6 weeks before you sow them. Germination can take 2 - 8 weeks. Transplant seedlings out into the garden when the vine is 8 - 10 inches long. Keep moist until established, but don't drown it with kindness!

if your part of MS is in USDA hardiness zone 6A or warmer, you could grow this in your garden, easily. some of my grandchildren got to watch caterpillars munching on the leaves in early spring, then making their cocoons, the butterflies emerging and learning to fly . . . such a cool moment with them!

btw, later in the year the leaves are back and the plant blooms . . .

I'll have to cherish the seeds until after Christmas and then work out how/where I want to plant them towards the end of fall, I think. ;) I'm in zone 5b, so I'm not confident in leaving them outside over the winter months.
