Description

The listing, OmniFI Digital Media Streamer has ended.

In 2003, this was considered one of the most innovative audio UPnP streaming solutions, winning numerous awards including TechTV's "Best of CES." It's features are numerous…

Rockford's OmniFI Digital Media Streamer (DMS1) connects to any existing home audio system. Functioning as an intelligent remote control, the DMS1 allows you to play your digital files directly from your home computer and Windows Media Connect for Windows XP or SimpleCenter. Multiple DMS units can play different music from one computer simultaneously.

* 32 x 128 graphics display
* 802.11b wireless LAN USB adapter
* Listen to standard MP3s and standard WMA files on your home stereo.
* Access live internet audio streams from all over the world.
* Interact with PC content using Omnifi home stereo remote control.
* Rhapsody music service compatible.
* Rip entire CD collection, build playlists, and customize music.
* Streams PC files to stereo
* Streams internet audio through PC to stereo
* TV display interface
* USB -to- Ethernet adapter included
* Wireless access eliminates moving PC to living room.

After it release, enthusiasts continued to improve the server-side software and eventually the firmware. (They started work with the DMP1, which was a automotive in-dash audio player and then the DMS1.) Now, it is a hackable, embedded device with a vibrant community. (Good starting point, is geekmatica's omnifi index: http://bit.ly/80qg4a)

The unit up for auction has not been used and is pristine condition. (I powered it up to ensure that it boots, but have not tried anything else.) Included is all the original packaging waiting for you to use it.

Don't forget it includes USB-to-Ethernet and USB-to-WiFi adapters!

Free shipping in the US only.

Please refrain from useless comments.

Warning: Best for open source hackers wanting another platform with which to tinker.

The technology is getting old, it is mainly cool for linux/open source hackers that are looking for another platform with which to toy around.

Most other folks will find it a pain...

Not natively or without some real effort... The unit does have USB ports and for the adventurous - it is possible. (http://bit.ly/8fdRbH)

The process is involved, so be warned.

I watch movies and ppv on my pc can i port that to my tv with this?
Jan 27th, 2010 at 5:58:19 PM PST by

No - it is built for streaming audio.

The video out portion of it was meant for selecting the right audio, I seriously doubt there is enough horsepower in it to do anything more than simple menus.

You have been posting some great items, just so I know how to manage my points, will you be posting more after this?

I'll keep posting, but I think this is the last of the audio streamers. I've got an old Newton that I will probably post next... nothing too special after that, at least for a while.

Do you have to hook up to stero reciever?or can you just hook speakers to and set up in living room?
Jan 31st, 2010 at 8:15:47 PM PST by

You can't just hook up speakers...

The back only has RCA jacks, so you need an amplifier of some sort... so, you would need to use the inputs on your stereo. (The Rio Receiver I auctioned off last week was cool in that it had a built in amplifier; this unit does not.)

Hmm..I remember this coming out and thinking that companies might have kept building until PC - Home Theater links were common and super simple. I think I overestimated. Too bad it's still stuck in techie realm (good I'm a techie though...:P )

Yeah,

Other than the technical challenges, I think the real problem was just too many legal issues and the acceptance (really?) of DRM.
