A very cool piece of history! This is an old shellback certificate dated January, 1942. The shellback ceremony is held on ships for Marines and Sailors when they cross the equator. The name on it is Clare William Monson, and the ship is the USS Matsonia. He was a Marine in World War II. The embossing appears to say 1st BN, 8th Mar, 2d Brig (but I am not 100% sure on that).
