The sign is first attested in British, American, Canadian, Mexican and other Spanish American business correspondence in the 1770s, referring to the Spanish American peso,[1][2] also known as "Spanish dollar" or "piece of eight" in British North America, which provided the model for the currency that the United States later adopted in 1785 and the larger coins of the new Spanish American republics such as the Mexican peso, Peruvian eight-real and Bolivian eight-sol coins.

Great information, thank you. However, I am looking for a more specific answer to the question, when was the actual $ (dollar symbol) first placed on USA's coins? Sorry I was a little unclear in the way I worded the original question. Would you like to add more info to your previous answer?

dollars way earlier but coin not until February 2007, when it was used on the reverse of a $1 coin authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005... which i believe is the coin series you have up for auction now.

Hi there, thanks for commenting on this auction. Yes, this is one of the coins in the Presidential $1 Coin Series. However, I'm not going to publicly say whether or not you are right about the trivia question to be fair to others bidding and attempting to answer this question for the bonus coin. I'll let you know by message instead.
