The brightly-colored double flowers of Scabiosa atropurpurea, the pincushion flower, are large, intricate flowers that are often used in bouquets because of their size and color. They make great cut flowers and they dress up any outdoor garden. The plants grow up to 3 feet in height and grow to about 9” in width. The plants bloom with flowers that are 3” tall and 3” wide that are covered in spiky, ruffled petals, giving it its pincushion nickname.

The pincushion flower has been cultivated in Europe for centuries for its beautiful blooms as well as its garden benefits. These bright flowers will attract not only human onlookers, but also hummingbirds and butterflies. The plants are resistant to pests and to disease, making them an easy plant to care for. Plant the seeds in an area that gets partial shade if the climate is hot. In other areas, full sunlight is needed. Start the seeds indoors about one month before the last frost for a jumpstart on the blooms or direct sow them outside where you want them to grow. The seeds are packaged and germination tested for the current year.
