Kim:
I have this thing about staying away from "color-enhanced" gemstones (at least, SO hard for me to find natural carnelian with even this much "red!"

What is your personal feeling on this strand? Heated? Dyed? natural?

gracias, mi amiga...

That's a good question. If this strand had come in it's natural nugget form like most of my carnelian, I would be able to say, without a doubt whether or not it was treated, heated, dyed, etc. and the answer would most likely be "No". But these round ones, since they have been machine-cut, I am going to guess that they are probably heated. I know that they're not natural, because I ALWAYS make a note of it on the auction when they're natural. I don't believe that they're dyed, because they're the exact color of the chips and nuggest that are natural that I usually get. I cannot promised anything about the being heated part though. Kim

OK, this is really cool. Thanks for the instant answer!
I think I'll be asking fewer questions if I get to know your glossary of labels better.

Sounds like "natural" is the keyword I need to look for? (As opposed to 'genuine,' which just means that the turquoise or whatever is not 'imitation?')

Sounds like maybe I should do a listia keyword search on "kimrusk1" and "natural" if I want to see those kinds of auctions?

Also... if you happen to be in a "teaching" mood... Why does faceting imply heat treatment? Is it because if they go to the trouble of all that cutting, they tend to want the little stones to glimmer as much as possible, so they tend to add that extra step? Or is "heat treatment" actually a part of the cutting?

(I would gladly pay you credits for all of this instruction, BTW! LOL, but I'm serious.) Every time I ask a question, more appear.
Example: Once I bought some ice-crackled quartz elsewhere on line. When I held it in my hand, it didn't have the "energy-feeling" of quartz, anymore, although it was so beautiful I would have loved to work with it! I think all the little crackles were scattering the energy. (PS: Don't expect you to go with the 'energy' idea... but I'm sure you get the question :-)

That was what made me wary of "heat treatment." But maybe the "heat treatment" used to make that crackled quartz is an extreme type, and I don't need to feel concern about lesser types. I've not a clue.

PS: If you'd prefer to handle my questions thru messages or take me up on my offer of on-call mentoring... let me know!

many thanks, all peace --
