I have one of these Trent and yeah you have to use Manual Focus, it goes between your lense and the camera body so there is no longer that electronic connection that helps with the auto focus. It takes a bit to get used to using it but it does help with getting closer pics without being ON TOP of the subject.

I also have one of these on one of my camera thus why I am trying to get this one it does good with Night shots too.. also good for up close and is adjustable in how much length you need... as you can see on the numbers
