The listing, 25 Kentucky Coffeetree Seeds ~ Lot 3 has ended.
The Kentucky Coffeetree is a popular tree that can reach 60 to 75 feet in height and is a relatively fast growing tree. It's an excellent tree for parks, lawns, golf courses, and other large areas. This tree is a beautiful tree.is widely dispersed but rare. Rare species are those that are so uncommon that they should be monitored to determine whether their populations are becoming threatened.
Uses:
The wood is used by, both, cabinetmakers and carpenters and has very little sapwood.
The roasted seeds were used by early settlers as a coffee substitute; hence the trees common name. They're a very inferior substitute for real coffee and caution should be used in trying them as they are poisonous in large quantities.
CAUTION! The seeds and pods are poisonous. They reportedly contain cytisine, a quinolizidine alkaloid and nicotinic receptor agonist, which can be dangerous. The alkaloid is thought to be neutralized in the roasting process. Hydrocyanic acid has also been suggested as a possible toxin. It can be destroyed by thoroughly heating the beans for at least three hours at 150?C. The beans contain saponins which are more toxic to fish than to other animals.
Soil Type:
Prefers rich, deep, moist soil. Will adapt to poorer soils & environments such as chalk, limestone, drought, and city conditions.
Stratification Requirement:
Kentucky Coffeetree is easy to grow from seed. Filing the seedcoat by hand with a small file, and then soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours will ensure rapid germination. Propagation is also easy from dormant root cuttings.
