This is branded the "toilet screamer" and you can use it that way, just set it on the back part of the seat and leave the lid down. You could stick it to the underside of the lid but I don't trust the adhesive that well!
It's just a light-sensitive device that screams when the light hits it. Does just as well in the medicine cabinet (snoopy party guests?) - under a washcloth, put it in the kitchen to guard the candy, any number of uses.
